A friend asked me if I could make some headbands for her as she wears them all the time for her work as a beauty and massage therapist. I was given a few specifications regarding width, size and colour but the rest was pretty well up to me.
I made a few different styles for the different seasons but my one specification for myself was that they had to be adaptable so that I could change the width or length so that I could make them to suit a baby through to adult.
This pattern is the first I came up with and is very adaptable. You can embellish it with flowers, change colours to make stripes or whatever your imagination can come up with.
The basic pattern below is for an adult size but there are notes on how to adjust it for other sizes.

Materials
o
DK weight (8ply) yarn – 20 grams will make an
adult size headband
o
4mm (G) size hook
o
Needle for sewing ends together
Gauge/Tension
The pattern width is 6 cm wide and 52 cm long before sewing
the ends together although the gauge isn’t overly important with this design as
it can be adapted easily for the size you would like depending on the yarn and
the hook size.
Terminology
This pattern is written in UK Terms
o
CH = Chain
o
DC = Double Crochet (US Single crochet)
o
SK = Skip a stitch
Pattern
CH 14
Foundation row: DC
in fourth CH from the hook. * CH 1, SK next CH, DC in next CH. Repeat from * across,
ending with a DC in the last stitch. Turn
Row 1: CH
2, DC in first CH 1 space, *CH 1, DC in next CH 1 space. Repeat from * across. (The
last DC goes in the space created by the turning chain from the previous row.) Turn
Repeat Row 1 until fabric measures 52cm (87 rows, including
foundation)
Tie off, leaving enough yarn to sew the ends together.
Sew the shorter ends together to form the headband or
alternatively you can use your hook and slip stitch the ends together. (I find
sewing the ends together a much neater option).
Darn in ends.
Optional: Add any
extra embellishments if you wish e.g. flower or butterfly.
Notes
Using 4ply yarn?
To make the same size headband using a 4ply yarn, CH 18 to
begin with using a 3mm hook, then continue with the pattern as described.
Would you like the headband to be wider?
If you wish the headband to be wider then increase the
foundation row by a multiple of 2 until you reach your desired width. Continue
with the pattern as described.
Would you like the headband to be narrower?
If you wish the headband to be narrower, the minimum starting
chain requirement is 6 and then increase by a multiple of 2 until you reach
your desired width.
Below is an approximate size chart you can use as a guide.
